High School Music Teachers Participate in Seminar on Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally Responsive Teaching in Music

Tucson Unified high school music teachers participated in the Culturally Responsive Teaching in Music seminar sponored by UA School of Music, Bank One Visting Artists Professorship Awards, TUSD Fine  Arts, and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and instruction. Clinician Dr. Vicki Lind, Professor from Universy of Arkansas at Little Rock, disucssed the value of music and our personal motivation for teaching this art form.

Several discussion points challenged our thinking:

  • Culture is not static
  • What you believe in is what you teach
  • Who gave us standards to follow?
  • Do we really know what students need to know?
  • Does reading music offer freedom opening doors for students into artistic expression?
  • The new basics for learning include collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem solving
