Indigenous People's Day

Date issued: October 5, 2018

We are proud to announce that the Tucson Unified School District Board unanimously voted in favor to officially recognize the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.  Our teachers are encouraged to talk to their students about the importance of this proclamation and the recognition of Indigenous People's Day on October 15th, when they return from Fall Break.

"In recognition that the land where Tucson now sits was the ancestral home of Indigenous Peoples of the many nations in Arizona, including the Tohono O'Odham and Pascuq Yaqui, and to celebrate, appreciate, and support the over 2,500 Native students representing 58 tribes enrolled in Tucson Unified schools, the TUSD Governing Board adopted the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples' Day," begins the proclamation. To read the complete proclamation, please see this announcement.
