Students at Dietz K-8 to race for Thanksgiving turkeys

Community invited to cheer on children as they compete for frozen fowl donated by Wal-Mart

Students from Dietz K-8 School will compete for a special prize on Nov. 27: Thanksgiving turkeys.

The school is hosting a Turkey Trot for students in all grades starting at 11:00 a.m. Students will race from one end of the soccer field to the other and the winning boy and girl in each grade will take home a turkey donated by Wal-Mart.

"It started as this idea of a Turkey Trot, running around for some turkeys, and then we thought, ‘Let's make it a community event,'" says Tiffany McKee, principal at Dietz.

Staff members and faculty from Pima Community College, mentors from the University of Arizona, members of the Dietz neighborhood association and Dietz families are expected to attend the races.

"It's going to be a good time," McKee says. "What a cool thing to bring home a Butterball."

The Dietz student council is also hosting a food drive. The goal is to collect 3,000 items for the Pima County Food Bank.
