Magee Odyssey of the Minds teams finish strong at World Competition

Posted June 3, 2014

Magee Middle School's three Odyssey of the Mind teams placed in the top 15 in the World Finals held May 28 to May 31 at Iowa State University.

Magee has sent state champion teams to the world competition for 11 consecutive years and the school's coaches and teachers are proud of their continued achievement.

"Each team presented a long-term solution that members worked on for nine months. They used higher level thinking skills, engineering, mathematics, fine arts and presentation skills – but most of all, synergy and perseverance," said Marjorie Letson, Magee's Odyssey sponsor and head coach.

Results from this year's World Finals:

 • The school's Classics Team placed seventh in the "How We Rule" competition, which included more than 50 international and U.S. teams.
 • Magee's Classics Team placed second in the world in its division in the Spontaneous problem-solving category.
 • The Drama Team integrated the music staff in its solution and placed ninth in the "Seeing is Believing" category, which also had more than 50 entrants.
 • The Technical Team placed 14th in the "Haunted House" problem, which had the most competition, nearly 70 teams in the middle school division. The technical team used higher level mathematical equations to solve for pi and create technical special effects and illusions.

Odyssey of the Mind provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretations of literary classics. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
