TUSD joins Tucson community in welcoming home Davis Monthan airmen

Families reunited for food, music and fun on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2015, at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base as the community of Tucson, including Tucson Unified Schools, threw a welcome home appreciation event for our airmen who recently returned from overseas.

"It's amazing, really," senior airman Daniel Hughes remarked. "Helping our families out, making sure they're taken care of while we've been gone."

TUSD stepped up to lend a hand, offering volunteers from their central office to come help run the event, including superintendent Dr. H.T. Sánchez.

"[We want to] show our appreciation for their time and commitment in defending our freedoms," Dr. Sánchez said. "We're here to have a lot of fun; we're here to smile and greet people and really enjoy spending some time with our men and women in uniform."

The link between the community of Tucson and Davis-Monthan is strong, and one that has been around for some time.

Tech sergeant David Maida explained, "[the event] is like a capstone or showcase just to show that Davis-Monthan is part of the community and the community is part of Davis-Monthan."

Tucson Unified's own Borman Elementary resides on base and hosted an event earlier in the year when these same servicemen and servicewoman were deployed overseas around six months ago.

"It's kind of a full-circle type of event for us," Dr. Sánchez stated, regarding the sendoff earlier this year at Borman. "Now, everything comes full-circle and we get a chance to welcome them home."
