Miles teacher receives Teacher Excellence Award
Students gathered in the cafeteria at Miles Exploratory Learning Center on Tuesday morning to surprise their teacher, Mrs. Kristi Chapman. Mrs. Chapman won the September 2015 Teacher Excellence Award, which was presented by
Tucson Values Teachers
in conjunction with Office Max/Office Depot.
The cheers were loud for Mrs. Chapman, a 3-4-5 teacher who was able to accept the award in front of many current and former students, as well as her husband and daughter. The award included a $100 gift card and basket of classroom supplies. Also in attendance to congratulate Mrs. Chapman was Superintendent H.T. Sánchez, accompanied by members of his leadership team.
Fellow teacher Patty Mitchell nominated Mrs. Chapman for the award. Ms. Mitchell over the years has witnessed firsthand what Mrs. Chapman brings into the classroom to facilitate a dedicated environment of learning. The following is an excerpt from Ms. Mitchell’s nomination letter for Mrs. Chapman:
"Kristi always challenges herself right along with her students. Anytime you walk into her classroom you will see students engaged in experiments, discussions, writing, reading and math. Kristi earned her National Board Certification because she wanted to look critically at her own teaching to challenge her own practices. The benefit of that outcome is seen daily with her students and with her interactions with her peers. Projects, deep discussions and fun epitomize Kristi’s classroom."
