Key Vocabulary / Formulas/ Things to Remember

In an exponential equation, the base is a constant - any positive real number that is not equal to one - and the independent variable is in the exponent.

Examples of keywords that signal an exponential growth or decay model: an amount doubles, triples, is cut in half, or increases/decreases by a percent.

Exponential growth or decay formulas:

y=a•bx    or   y=a(1 ± r)x

[Where a is the initial amount, b or (1 ± r) is the number repeatedly multiplied, r is the percent written as a decimal, and x is the number of time intervals that have passed.]

An exponential function models growth when the base in the formula is greater than 1; it models decay when the base in the formula is a fraction between 0 and 1.
