Then you will find a selection of lessons and activities which help you practice and master those skills. If you run into technical issues or other difficulties with any of these, simply move on and choose another.

Watch the interactive video below about a controlled experiment studying elephant communication and respond to the prompts in the video.

Extension:  Watch the elephants at the Reid Park Zoo on the Elephant Cam.  Do you notice any evidence of elephants communicating by air or ground vibrations? Think of a research question you could test virtually.  Design your experiment and identify the variables.  Conduct the experiment, if possible, using virtual observation data from the zoo cams.

Choose one of the experimental questions and explain how you would design a controlled experiment to test this.  Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables.

Extension

Ask a research question about something that interests you and develop a hypothesis.  Design a controlled experiment to test your hypothesis. Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables. (You do not need to do the experiment.)

Vocabulary

Variable:  Any condition that may cause a change in the system being studied. 

Hypothesis:  A testable explanation.

Controlled experiment: An experiment in which only one variable is changed to ensure that the effect of only that one variable can be measured.

Independent Variable: The variable changed by the experimenter.

 

Controlled variables (constants): Variables that are not being studied.  These should be kept constant during an experiment to avoid changing the outcome.

Dependent variable: The variable that changes as a result of the independent variable and is measured during the experiment to collect data.
