Sahuaro girls golfers win first-ever state title

Posted October 30, 2013

The Sahuaro High School girls golf team came from behind Tuesday to win the school's first girls state championship in the school's history.

Going into the final day of play at Aguila Golf Course in Phoenix, the Cougars were in third place behind two tough teams: Scottsdale Notre Dame and Salpointe Catholic. Salpointe has won the title the past two years.

"It was a very difficult task for our girls to accomplish," said Herman House, TUSD's Director of Interscholastics. "They defied quite a few odds."

Though none of the players finished in the top five, and only two finished in the top 15, House praised second-year coach Megan Hughes for her work with bringing the team together and highlighted what the girls have accomplished in a short time.

"It was a total team effort, and that's what we teach our kids, to put in a team effort," House said.
