Sabino High School hosts 2,000 visitors for state student council convention

Posted January 24, 2014

Sabino High School welcomes about 2,000 students and advisers from around the state on Jan. 23-25, 2014, for the Arizona Association of Student Councils annual convention.

Sabino's theme for the convention is "Go All In on Leadership," and the event will feature motivational speakers, leadership workshops and entertainment including bands, performing arts groups, circus acts, theme days and an "All That Glitters" dance.

"With the 'Go All In on Leadership' theme, we are encouraging students not to just think about your school—colors and theme for prom—think about what you can do for your community," says Alex Sierra, Sabino's student council adviser.

The convention kicked off at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, with an opening ceremony where Dr. H.T. Sánchez, TUSD superintendent, and Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild were among the speakers. The keynote address was given by Amanda Hammett, a motivational speaker from Georgia who talked about learning from failure.

Entertainment that night included the Sabino choir, Pueblo Magnet High School's Mariachi Aztlán, an acro-balancing act from Phoenix, Sabino's drumline, a carnival, performances on the "Sabino Casino Showcase Stage" and more.

Workshops on Saturday will be conducted by the University of Arizona student government, Ben's Bells and Sabino's student council. Friday's keynote speech will be given by Andy Thibodeau, who focuses on balancing having fun and learning at school. Saturday will feature Shannon Pickard, an actor and comedian who aims to inspire students to lead and achieve.

Sabino has chosen the Community Food Bank as the convention charity and will be collecting non-perishable items throughout the convention.
