UHS Math Team hopes to recycle its way to national competitions

Posted May 7, 2014

The University High School math team is conducting a recycling program to help raise money to send members to the Mathleague National Competition in Kansas City and the American Regions Mathematics League Championships in Las Vegas in May 2015.

Donations of old cell phones, laptops, iPads, iPods and ink cartridges will be accepted at the UHS office on the Rincon/UHS campus, 421 N. Arcadia Ave., through May 23. All items donated are tax deductible.

"We were invited this year and could not attend due to lack of funds," said Barry Callesen, a math teacher at UHS and sponsor of the team. "We had the fifth highest score in the nation on the qualifier. The team looks like it will be even more competitive next year."

The math team had many successes this year. The team placed 14th in the nation on the Rocket City Team Test, placed seventh in the nation in the open division of the Rocket City Individual Tests and finished in the top 10 percent in the world on the Purple Comet Competition.

The UHS team also received 18 out of the 43 plaques that were awarded to the top students on the Arizona State Math Test.

The math club also hosted elementary, middle and high school contests, attended by more than 750 students from Southern Arizona.
