Alice Vail Middle School bands record excellent year

Posted May 15, 2014

Congratulations to Diana West Acuna, director of bands at Alice Vail Middle School, and her Band Falcons, who have had great success this year. The jazz and symphonic bands earned top honors in competitions with high school bands, 32 Falcons chosen for the TUSD Honor Band and two members—Kevin Choi and Esteban Cordova were selected as first chair in the state.

In March, the Jazz Band outperformed many high school bands and earned a Superior rating in the ABODA Area High School Jazz Festival. The Symphonic Band performed in the ABODA Concert Band Festival, earning a Superior with Distinction rating, the highest rating possible.

Alice Vail concluded the year at the WorldStrides Heritage Festival in Anaheim last weekend. The Jazz Band earned the highest rating, Gold, took first place out of all the junior high school jazz bands and received a trophy for Outstanding Band Group of the entire festival over all the high school bands.

The Symphonic Band earned the highest rating, Gold, and took first place in the junior high concert band category and received a Certificate of Invitation to perform at a WorldStrides Heritage Festival of Gold.

The bands’ combined scores were the highest of the festival and earned them the trophy for Instrumental Sweepstakes of the entire event, also over all the high school bands.

Mrs. West Acuna received the coveted Adjudicator Award trophy for excellence in teaching. Three Alice Vail soloists received "Maestro" Awards: Lilly Clark, Alicia Morales, and Kevin Choi. Amanda Conrad received the "Stand Strong" award from Disney, Inc. for persevering in musical excellence even through difficult life circumstances.

The jazz and symphonic bands have their year-end concert at 7 p.m. tonight at Alice Vail Middle School (5350 E. 16th St.).
