Safford wins statewide recognition for civic engagement

Safford K-8 Magnet School will be one of 27 public schools across the state to be recognized on Sept. 17 -- Constitution Day -- as Arizona Civic Engagement schools by the Arizona Department of Education's Excellence in Civic Engagement Program for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Excellence in Civic Engagement Program recognizes and supports the important role schools play in ensuring that students are informed and engaged citizens.

Safford was named a School of Merit in the program, which recognizes schools that demonstrate knowledge and the effective implementation of six practices in civic learning:

 • Classroom instruction in civics & government, history, economics, geography, law and democracy
 • Service learning linked to classroom learning
 • Experiential learning
 • Learning through participation in models and simulations of democratic processes and procedures
 • Guided classroom discussion of current issues and events
 • Meaningful participation in school governance
