TUSD students win awards at the Southern AZ Research, Science, and Engineering Foundation Fair 2015

Updated May 5, 2015

Exploring questions such as "Which liquid's viscosity will be affected the most when you add sugar?" and "Do sad songs change your emotions?", students from TUSD schools investigated real-world situations for their projects entered in the Southern AZ Research, Science, and Engineering Foundation Fair of 2015 (SARSEF). Awards went to 138 projects from 22 TUSD schools.

In addition, five teams went on to win awards at the state Arizona Science and Engineering Fair. (State winners are highlighted in blue in the table below.)

Through sponsoring a forum for students to share their research and by inviting the community to view the research projects, SARSEF promotes science education. TUSD's younger students won awards for projects that explored practical questions such as that posed by fourth-grade researchers at Wright Elementary who investigated "What cup keeps my drink cooler?" Sixth-graders from Doolen Middle School were awarded a grand prize for their research into the question, "Are middle schoolers in danger of hearing damage?" One of the more ambitious high school projects was by Meagan A. Bethel of Tucson High Magnet School. Under the direction of the nationally recognized and award-winning teacher Margaret Wilch, Ms. Bethel conducted a "Non-invasive Analysis of Genetic Diversity Using Microsatellites and Mitochondrial DNA to Identify Individuals, Diet, and Minimum Number of Pumas (Puma concolor) in Sonora, Mexico."

Participation in SARSEF brings educational results. The Science AIMS scores for schools that participated in SARSEF were higher than the average scores of others in the state at all tested levels. Over the years, SARSEF winners have gone on to compete at national and international science and engineering events, and have become expert critical thinkers, talented scholars and world-class scientists.

"The importance of STEM education will be critical for our students' success in college, career, and life," says TUSD's science program coordinator, Joan Gilbert.

Congratulations to all of our students and teachers who participated in the SARSEF 2015!
