Drachman celebrates excellence award

Posted May 14, 2015

Drachman Montessori Magnet School celebrated its designation as a 2015 National Magnet School of Excellence today.

Students and staff, dressed in pajamas for Spirit Week, gathered in the courtyard for the celebration. Dr. Jesus Celaya asked fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students to form two lines and grasp hand across to form a "love tunnel" for the teachers to come through.

As Dr. Celaya touted, "Our great accomplishment as a staff … receiving a Magnet Schools of America Magnet School of Excellence award … only one school in the State of Arizona has this award," he and teachers passed through the tunnel of students to loud cheers from the rest of the staff and students.

Magnet School of Excellence Awards are given to only a select group of magnet schools that have demonstrated the highest level of excellence in academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation and diversity efforts, and the consistent delivery of high quality educational services to all stakeholders.

"All the way across the country they heard about us," Dr. Celaya said. "Mrs. Krystal Enriquez went to North Carolina to accept the Magnet Schools of Excellence award."

The happy ceremony was followed by a talent show rehearsal, where students, staff and Dr. Celaya had fun performing their acts. Dr. Celaya celebrated his 10th anniversary at the school with a juggling and dance routine to students' favorite songs over the years.
