Carrillo celebrates its A+ status
Posted May 18, 2015
Carrillo K-5 Magnet School was buzzing with excitement Monday morning as students, staff, parents and community members celebrated the school's recent designation as an A+ School of Excellence.
The party atmosphere included balloons, upbeat music and cake.
During the assembly, Mike Gardner of the Arizona Education Foundation presented the school with a banner to proudly display for the next three years. Gardner told the crowd of excited students, "We looked at some good schools. We found some great schools, and you lead the class!"
Gardner went on to read comments made about the school by teachers, students and parents. "Everyone said the Carrillo cougars are awesome, they deserve an A+."
Also in attendance were Dr. H.T. Sánchez, Superintendent of Tucson Unified School District, along with Governing Board President Adelita Grijalva, board member Cam Juárez, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Leadership Ana Gallegos and Elementary Leadership Director Maria Marin.
The students cheered loudly when Dr. Sánchez was introduced and when he led them in a cheer, "We are the best" to see which side of the room was louder. Dr. Sánchez told them, "Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Brag to your parents, your grandparents that you are the best. Congratulations!"
The A+ designation is not easy to achieve. It is a comprehensive school assessment program that recognizes schools for outstanding work in the areas of student focus and support, school culture, active teaching and learning, curriculum, leadership community and achievement.
Principal Lori Connor told the students the family atmosphere on campus made all the difference. "We feel like we are family here. I believe that's why this school is so successful. All of the teachers are dedicated to treating you like family. We want you to be leaders."
Carrillo is one of two Tucson Unified School District schools to get the A+ designation this year. Dodge Traditional Magnet Middle School celebrated their success last week.
