Parents and students who attended the Cholla Magnet High School open house on Aug. 18 were treated to performances by the Cholla Spirit Line and Marching Band as they arrived in the main courtyard outside the auditorium.
Inside, Principal Frank Armenta and the school's assistant principals presented an informative series of slides about the basic workings of Cholla and ended with an impressive list of accomplishments from the previous year. For more information, view this slide show presentation (in PDF).
Next, parents were treated to an abbreviated example of their children's daily schedule. They spent six-minute periods at each class and had an opportunity to meet their students' teachers. During this time, staff and students were set up in the commons area to help, direct, inform and entertain the parents in between their "classes."
One of the student groups was the Family Career and Community Leaders of America or FCCLA. At this table, student members, Zelenna Martinez, Amy Lizarraga, and Mercedes Vega were showcasing their group's participation and support of the March of Dimes and the fundraising walk held each spring.
Entertainment was provided by the Cholla Blues Standard band. This band is part of Cholla's after-school program. It is a great example of the enrichment opportunities that are available in addition to academic assistance. You can hear more from these remarkable musicians when they open the Blues Festival at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 at Rillito Park. They also be participating in the Southern Arizona Blues Showcase on Nov. 11.
