Asian Pears make their way into TUSD cafeterias

Photo of pear pickingSix thousand pounds of delicious Asian pears have made their way into our TUSD cafeterias!

Recently, six thousand pounds of pears were purchased by TUSD through the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona for elementary schools taking part in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. A total of 13 TUSD elementary schools are participating in this program.

On Friday, September 25, a TUSD Food Services team, the University of Arizona's Integrated Ecology & Sustainability Program, and the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona made a visit to the Sleeping Frog Farm's Asian Pear Orchard.

From the orchard, the pears were picked and sent to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona over the course of three weeks. The pears were then inspected and delivered to the TUSD Central Kitchen, where from there they were hand washed, sorted, and finally delivered to schools.

5,675 TUSD elementary students received the pears as part of their classroom nutrition education snack time. Who knew learning could be so delicious?
