Santa Rita brings community together for special Prom

About 280 Exceptional Education students expected at annual dance.

Santa Rita High School's National Honor Society is hosting an Exceptional Education prom for about 280 students and 100 adults on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school, 3951 S. Pantano Road.

This is the seventh year for the dance, which started as an event for Tucson Unified students, but over the years has expanded to include school districts from around the city. This year, students will be coming from Tucson Unified, Flowing Wells, Amphi, Marana and Sunnyside.

Rhiannon Brooks, Santa Rita's National Honor Society advisor and Math Department Chair, said the prom is held in honor of the Exceptional Education students.

"It started because a lot of the times school proms are too expensive and transportation is costly for the parents," Ms. Brooks said. She said each school will crown a prince and princess at the end of the prom and will feature a disc jockey, snacks and "a lot of dancing."
