For a crossing guard, the job is never done. Making sure students arrive and depart school grounds safely is a constant battle of the elements. In this case, it was a driver who didn't heed the rules of the road. Crossing Guard Maria Diarte was on duty one March day. She was helping two children cross the street with her "stop" paddle held out to a motorist. The driver ignored her stop sign and drove on while Maria moved the students out of the way. In doing so, she placed her own body in between the moving vehicle and the children. Director of School Safety Jeffrey Coleman awarded Maria the Chief's Commendation for handling the dangerous event.
