Instruction

Students in the GATE program are expected to meet the State Standards established for all TUSD students. Instruction in the GATE program is intended to extend and enrich the State Standards to provide students the opportunity to fully develop their educational potential. Teachers in the GATE program are responsible for differentiating instruction for students in the following areas:

  1. Content, including broad based interdisciplinary curriculum
  2. Process, including higher level thinking skills
  3. Product, including variety and complexity
  4. Learning Environment, including flexibility

All district GATE program teachers should have a copy of, and be familiar with, the GATE Curriculum Scope and Sequence. The GATE Curriculum Scope and Sequence is a resource developed for GATE teachers that provides instructional activities designed to integrate CORE Curriculum goals with gifted education instructional strategies. The strategies and activities described in the GATE Curriculum Scope and Sequence give guidance to teachers on how to differentiate instruction in the areas of Content, Process, Product, and Learning Environment. Copies of the GATE Curriculum Scope and Sequence are available through the GATE Office.

The GATE Curriculum Scope and Sequence is designed to complement the overall curriculum goals identified in the district Governing Board policies on ACTion 2000, Gifted Education, and Diversity Appreciation. The GATE Curriculum Scope and Sequence builds upon the Diversity, Instruction, Environment, and Curriculum indicators from ACTion 2000 in the following ways:

  1. Planning and developing curriculum that includes diversity appreciation.
  2. Promoting critical thinking and problem solving.
  3. Providing a framework for integrated instruction and life skill development.
  4. Emphasizing teaching strategies that accommodate a variety of learning styles.
  5. Having high expectations for all students.
  6. Encouraging and supporting risk-taking.
