Tucson Unified School District employees may drive District vehicles or their personal vehicles for District business and for transporting students with prior approval. This travel must also be required in the performance of their assigned duties according to the following criteria.

Use of School Vehicles

  • No District vehicle shall be used for personal business.
  • Only Governing Board members and District employees may drive TUSD vehicles.
  • No District vehicle shall be taken to an employee's home at night unless the employee has permission from the Superintendent or designee.

Use of Private Vehicle

  • Employees must receive authorization from their Site Administrator or Department Manager in order to use their private vehicle for District business.
  • Reimbursement for mileage will only be given to the owner of the private vehicle according to IRS standards, which covers gas and all indirect costs.
  • Reimbursement for mileage outside the District's boundaries will be given for District business only.
  • An employee using a private vehicle for a District trip shall not claim mileage for any purely personal use of the vehicle during said trip.

TUSD assumes no liability for use of employees' personal vehicles outside the course and scope of their employment or responsibility, or for activities in violation of this policy and regulation.

Bus Drivers
This policy does not cover bus drivers with a commercial drivers license (CDL) because the Arizona Department of Transportation in conjunction with TUSD Department of Transportation oversees those licenses.

Accident Report
Any accident (no matter how minor) in a school vehicle or in any private vehicle while on school business is to be reported immediately to Risk Management or School Safety. School Safety will notify the “on call” risk management representative.

Authority and Responsibility
Administrators shall be responsible for making certain that the use of school vehicles is not abused, and it is the responsibility of such administrative personnel to assure that all travel has the appropriate approval.
