BOARD POLICY 4360
The Tucson Unified
School District Governing Board is concerned about the health of its employees and
students, and recognizes the importance of adult role-modeling for students during
formative years.
Tucson Unified School
District is dedicated to providing a healthy, comfortable, and educationally productive
environment for students, staff and visitors.
The Surgeon General of
the United States has concluded that involuntary smoking is a cause of disease, including
lung cancer, in healthy nonsmokers. The simple separation of smokers and nonsmokers within
the same airspace may reduce, but does not eliminate, the exposure of nonsmokers to
environmental tobacco smoke.
In light of the above,
Tucson Unified School District shall be entirely tobacco/smoke-free.
Smoking, the use of
tobacco, or the possession of tobacco products, are strictly prohibited in all District
buildings, on all District property, on school grounds, inside school buildings, in school
parking lots or playing fields, in school buses or vehicles, or at off-campus school
sponsored events. TUSD employees are prohibited from the use, or possession, of tobacco
products while performing the duties of their positions away from District property. This
includes, but is not limited to, crossing guards, teachers or other staff supervising
students on trips, etc., volunteers on District sites or voluntary employees transporting
children to and from a District activity (such as school excursions, etc.).
This policy applies to
all students, parents/legal guardians, employees, and visitors.
"Tobacco
products" include cigarettes, cigarette papers, cigars, smokeless tobacco, and
smoking tobacco.
Signs will be posted
in all District buildings and vehicles.
A list of smoking
cessation programs available in the community will be made available for those employees
who smoke and would like to take this opportunity to quit. The District is unable to fund
these programs for employees at this time, however there are numerous programs
in the community that are at no cost to the participants.
Failure to comply with
this policy may subject the employee to disciplinary action, including termination.
The success of this
policy will depend upon the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and
nonsmokers. All employees share in the responsibility for adhering to and enforcing this
policy.
