A Message from the Board President
As you read through this month's
Board Report you will learn that a search firm has been selected to help the Governing
Board in identifying candidates for the position of superintendent.
We are pleased to be working with Dr. Noeske who will be meeting with employee groups
and other community organizations to receive input into the Superintendent Profile.
If you belong to a group and would like to arrange for a meeting with the consultant,
please call the Governing Board office to schedule an appointment.
A very difficult decision regarding health insurance came before the Governing Board at
this last meeting.
We are very concerned about the changes that will be taking place with the selection
of a new health plan. A great deal of time and consideration went into making this
decision.
Deborah Edgell, assistant purchasing agent, and Karen Mejia, Employee Benefits manager
worked diligently with the Health Advisory and Professional Insurance Advisory committees
to identify the best possible health plans through the competitive procurement process.
Tom Peeler, director of Purchasing, helped oversee the process.
Health Insurance Advisory Committee members included:
- Rose García - ELI representative
- Michael Gordy - TEA president
- Marylin Freed - TEA vice-president
- Tom Gillispie - TEA
- Andrea Haber - TEA (white collar)
- Billie Fugate - TEA (white collar)
- Cydni Glenn - TEA
- Marcos Castro - AFSCME
- Mary Ann Lemon - Human Resources
Professional Advisory Committee members included:
- Michael Leed - Drachman-Leed Insurance
- Joan Nordhausen - Equitable Financial
- Tony Ziehler - Ziehler Insurance
We have provided information in this Board Report and will continue to communicate
information.
In other action, the Board voted to adopt the Legislative Agenda proposed by the Pima
County School Board/Superintendent Collaborative.
We are always concerned about what is happening in the legislature as it affects
education.
Serving TUSD and protecting our interests is our lobbyist Sam Polito who works
tirelessly to represent the educational community in Pima County.
Finally, on a more personal note, the Governing Board will host a celebration for
Superintendent George García, who will be retiring in June.
We are asking you to save the date of Wednesday, May 31, for a very special evening
at the Doubletree Hotel, 445 S. Alvernon. Tickets for the event will be $50 with proceeds
benefitting TUSD's Educational Enrichment Foundation.
We will provide more details as the date approaches. We hope that you will be able to
join us for this celebration.
Have a great Rodeo vacation!
Mary Belle McCorkle, Ed.D.
