A Message from the Board President
Many of you are familiar with the Board Report. This year we have
reformatted it to serve as a vehicle to keep you better informed about key decisions made
at Governing Board meetings as well as to share with you district news.
As always, we welcome your comments and feedback. On the back of this
report, please find a location and e-mail address to contact us.
Welcome to the 1999-2000 school year. As we complete the first month of
school we're very appreciative of your efforts to successfully launch the year.
Many instances of the power of teamwork abound. For example, an
extraordinary group from Information Technologies, Payroll, Finance and Human Resources
worked long hours to successfully run the first payroll of the year using our new Y2K
compliant PeopleSoft program. Special thanks to Tom Peeler, director of Purchasing, Jerry
Sidio, director of Facilities Management, and Pam Palmo, director of Food Services, for
their efforts.
On school campuses, the teamwork among monitors, staff and parents has
increased student safety. Teamwork between employee groups and the district allowed
negotiations to be settled for most employees.
We also have good news to share as a result of the vote taken at
September's Governing Board meeting. The board voted to make the following budget
allocations from available funds:
An increase in dollars for teaching supplies
Additional funds for monitors at all levels
Funds needed to provide counseling support at all sites
Funds to hire two additional nurses
An increase in funds to provide custodial support at the sites
An increase in funds to hire exceptional education teacher assistants
Additional funds to purchase supplies for facility maintenance
Although this is not a n exhaustive list of the allocations, we
anticipate that these will impact you at some level. We would also like to thank our Pima
County legislators for providing our district with a better level of funding this year.
As you read this new Board Report, you'll learn about additional
teachers hired to reduce class sizes. You'll also learn about the A/C guidelines set by
the State Facilities Board and the implications for TUSD. Each issue will also focus on a
key area of Curriculum and Instruction.
As always, literacy for all students remains our priority. We are
excited about what this year will produce and look forward to a successful and safe school
year.
Mary Belle McCorkle, Ed.D
