A Message from the Board President
It's hard to believe that we've
finally arrived at the last Governing Board meeting for 1999. At December's meeting
changes were announced that will bring many challenges for the coming new year.
First is the announcement by Dr. García that he will retire on June 29, 2000. His
upcoming retirement means that for the next six months the Governing Board will work on
identifying a new superintendent.
The first step in this process will be a Governing Board retreat at which time we will
develop a profile and search procedure for a new superintendent. The retreat is scheduled
to take place sometime in January or February.
December's board meeting marked the last meeting for Robert O'Toole, executive manager
for Fiscal and Operational Support. He is retiring after nine years of excellent service
to our district.
Another change effective Jan. 3 is the increase in the substitute teacher pay. We
believe that the new pay rate will allow TUSD to be more competitive in the market of
substitutes. Orr schoools must be substitute friendly. We are asking for other creative
solutions.
Negotiations with Supervisory/Confidential employees have finally come to completion.
The new agreement provides for a 4.5 percent increase for each year of the two-year
agreement (retro to July 1 for 1999-2000).
In addition, an increase in the district's contribution for those employees who decline
medical coverage and an increased longevity bonus (retro to July 1) are also part of the
agreement.
Other pay changes approved by the board at this meeting included increasing the
salaries for summer school teachers and coordinators. Beginning with the 2000 summer
school program, teachers will earn $20 an hour and coordinators will earn $25 per hour.
