October 1, 1996 Special Board Meeting Highlights

Appointed Susan Preimesberger as principal of Sabino High School; she previously served as assistant principal at Tucson High Magnet and Sabino high schools. Appointed Glynda Underwood as assistant principal of Dodge Middle Magnet School.

Approved plans and specifications for remodeling/renovation of Jefferson Park Elementary School, with authorization to call for bids, $811,495 (bond). Renovation highlights include new floor coverings, ceilings and lighting, expanded/remodeled administration and nurse's area. Jefferson Park is the final overall school project to be renovated in the 1989 construction bond project.

Approved a proclamation of November 4-8, 1996 as disAbility Awareness Week in TUSD.

Approved agreements/contracts with CODAC Behavioral Health Services for the Child and Adult Food Program; with Pima Community College for the Talent Search Program; with the City of Tucson for the installation of a school crossing flasher light at Tucson High Magnet School; and with the Arizona Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs for the Summer Meals Program.

Approved a funding proposal in collaboration with five Tucson school districts to the U.S. Department of Education for School Safety/Crime Prevention and Cultural Awareness Promotion.

 


October 15, 1996 Regular Board Meeting

Action Agenda Highlights

Approved a proclamation for TUSD's participation in the National Red Ribbon Campaign as part of "Red Ribbon Week," October 21-25, 1996. This campaign is a week-long celebration of events designed to increase awareness about drug abuse prevention. Schools will be sponsoring many activities to promote drug-free lifestyles.

Approved the 1995-96 Annual Financial Report, with noted revisions, in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes. The summary of the report will be published in a local newspaper, as required by law.

Approved the correction of a typographical error in the 1996-1998 Consensus Agreement between TUSD and the Tucson Education Association.

 


 

Study/Action Agenda Highlights

Reviewed and approved plans and specifications for construction of Tucson High Magnet School concrete tennis and basketball courts, with authorization to call for bids, $541,950 (bond). This four-month project, scheduled to begin in December 1996, will provide six new tennis courts, two basketball courts, new drainage and exterior lights.

 

Consent Agenda Highlights

Approved 57 certified personnel new hires/replacements, 39 classified reinstatements/new hires, 107 certified personnel salary changes, 149 classified personnel salary changes, 6 certified personnel separations, 18 classified personnel separations, 1 request for leave of absence for certified personnel, 6 requests for leaves of absence for classified personnel, 1 request to cancel a leave of absence, 13 requests for released time, 8 requests for released time and travel expenses. Approved two funding proposals: Pima-Santa Cruz Counties' School-to-Work proposal to the Governor's Division of School-to-Work, $676,800 (continuation); Kraft Food's Corporate Contributions Program on behalf of Corbett, Myers/Ganoung and Roberts elementary schools and Naylor Middle School, $223,948 (new) - this funding would provide summer school, GED and ESL services, computer skills training, and many other services to these school communities.

Approved three agreements:

  • Child and Adult Care Food Program with the Tucson Association of Child Care to provide snack services for after-school programs.
  • Intergovernmental Agreement with the City of Tucson for design and construction of improvements to a baseball field at Cholla High Magnet School, including installation of night lights and new access facilities.
  • Agreement with the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross for the use of TUSD facilities as Mass Care Shelters.

Approved two awards of bids:

  • Morrow Education Center and Finance Building renovation/priority one improvements, $1,038,000 (bond), to include new doors and hardware, fire sprinkler and fire alarm system, a new elevator in the Finance Building, correction of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) deficiencies, and other upgrades.
  • Pueblo High Magnet School Lever Gym/South Gym, Cafeteria, Industrial Education and Stadium Building general upgrades, $649,000 (bond), to include ADA accessibility, new hardware/fixtures and new evaporative coolers, lighting and plumbing upgrades.

Approved revision of authorized agents/administrators to sign federal and state grant documents, reflecting recent personnel changes in central administration.


Information Agenda Highlights

This meeting featured a special study feature, "Overview of Diversity Appreciation Policy with a Focus on African American Studies," with staff presenting highlights of educational programs and instruction.

Report from City Councilwoman Shirley Scott and City of Tucson architect Chuck Albanese on the collaborative development of Lincoln Park, adjacent to Santa Rita High School. This project involves the City of Tucson and Pima Community College.
