ACTION ITEMS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Proclaimed Read Across America in Tucson Unified School District, March 2, 1999.
  • Adopted hearing officers' recommendations regarding the expulsion of three students.
  • Approved the extension of Superintendent's contract.
  • Approved the administrative appointments, transfers and reassignments of: Jan Vesely, principal, Howell Elementary School; Patricia Conn, Ed.D., assistant principal, Hohokam Middle School; Mary Neale, Robert Pitts, program specialists, Rosemont Service Center.
  • Approved the Guidelines for Students' Rights and Responsibilities (revision).
  • Approved the sale of property along East Broadway to the City of Tucson for roadway widening purposes.

CONSENT AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Authorized the disposal of Administrative Records from Manzo and Schumaker elementary schools, Utterback Middle Magnet School, Cholla and Santa Rita high schools and Project M.O.R.E.
  • Approved Medicaid refinancing of School Based Health Services Program Consulting Agreement for the period of April 26, 1999 through December 31, 1999 (extension).
  • Approved Intergovernmental Agreement between Tucson Unified School District and the City of Tucson for the installation of school crossing flashing signs on Broadway Boulevard at Park Avenue and on Fifth Street at Arcadia Avenue (new).
  • Awarded Bids:
    1. Food Services Bid No. 99S1 - Food Services Department Staple/Dry Goods to various vendors.
    2. Food Service Bid No. 99F1 - Food Services Department Frozen Foods to various vendors.
  • Authorized Governing Board Member(s) to attend the 5th International Conference, Teaching for Intelligence, San Francisco, California, April 16-22, 1999
  • Authorized Governing Board Member(s) to attend the Council of the Great City Schools' Spring Legislative/Policy Conference, Washington, D.C., March 19-25, 1999.
  • Authorized Governing Board Member(s) to attend the Development of Chicano Studies Curricula K-12 Conference, Denver, Colorado, March 19-22, 1999.
  • Voted not to accept arbitrator's recommendation - Grievance No. 1836.
  • Ratified salary and non-salary vouchers for the period beginning January 12, 1999 and ending January 31, 1999.

Superintendent's Honor Roll Nominees:

  • Steven Reff, teacher; Daniel Bartlett, Matthew Conaty, Renata Keller, Kirk McGettigan, Wyatt Unger, students at University High School - placed First at the 12th Federal Reserve District Economics Challenge.
  • Karen Scheidegger, social worker at Mission View Elementary School - spearheaded fund-raising effort for Norma Siqueiros, a student in need of a kidney transplant.
  • Kelsy Gongwer, senior at Rincon High School - won a full tuition scholarship from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans (one of two students to receive the award).

STUDY/ACTION ITEM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Approved requests for additional space - Students First.
  • Studied the appointment of an East Growth Task Force Committee.
  • Approved televising TUSD Governing Board Meetings as a pilot program for the balance of the 1998-99 school year.

  • Student Advisory Council report from Aaron Ireland, student liaison to the Governing Board.
  • Arizona's Open Meeting Law - Arizona Revised Statutes §38-431 - Public Meetings and Proceedings.
