Therapeutic Recreation Programs, through May 2
Tucson Parks and Recreation is offering programs for children ages 6 and up and for
youth and adults ages 16 and over with mental, physical, emotional, sensory or learning
disabilities at various schools and recreation areas through May 2. Individualized
assistance for persons with disabilities who wish to participate in any of the other
programs and activities offered by Tucson Parks and Recreation will be available. All
programs will be held at Therapeutic Recreation Center, 1000 S. Randolph Way, unless

Horace Mann Scholarships
High school seniors who are children of public school employees are eligible for Horace
Mann college scholarships. Scholarship applications are available from TUSD
Communications, 617-7303; and on the World Wide Web at www.horacemann.com (or write to the
Horace Mann Scholarship Program, P.O. Box 20490 , Springfield, Illinois 62708). The
program awards $50,000, including one $20,000 scholarship, to college-bound high school
seniors who have at least a "B" average and score at least 23 on the ACT or
1,100 on the SAT. Completed applications must be postmarked by February 28, 1998. |
Congratulations to TUSD United Way contributors
Once again TUSD employees have demonstrated their commitment to the community by pledging
$141,029 to the United Way Campaign--a 17.8% increase over last year. Thank you for your
support. WM Symposia Offers Free Teacher's Workshop
A workshop focusing on K-12 education in energy, environment and economics of radioactive
waste management will be held from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, in the
Gila/Coconino Room at the Tucson Convention Center. Information on the effects of
low-levels of radiation on the body, science experiments with radiation, and utilization
of radiation detectors will also be available. Sponsored by the University of Arizona, the
American Nuclear Society, the New Mexico State University, WERC and WM Symposia, Inc., the
workshop will be held in conjunction with the annual Waste Management '98 conference. In
addition to the formal workshop, a tour of the of the Waste Management '98 exhibit area

Purchasing/Warehouse Camp
Back by popular demand is the Purchasing Warehouse Camp addressing such topics as
simplifying the requisition process, one stop shopping, what's new in the warehouse, and
news to use. Camp will be held on the following dates: Monday, February 9, 2:00 - 4:00
p.m., and Thursday, February 12, 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Both sessions will be held at 1010 East

International Perspectives: Gender Issues in School and Society
Teachers and administrators with an interest in gender equity issues and in particular the
pros and cons of single-sex education have a unique opportunity this summer for
travel-study in England. Dr. Jan Streitmatter, University of Arizona professor of
educational psychology, will lead a five-week trip to London to study gender issues in
schools and society. Six units of credit can be earned, and classroom work will be
supplemented by visits to local schools for observations. Contact Caroline Patrick Jones

Free Workshops Offered at Fathers Only Conference
Free workshops covering parenting and educational issues for the fathers will be offered
at the third annual "Fathers Only" conference February 7, 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
at Mansfeld Middle School library. Hosted by TUSD, the conference will cover topics such
as: Dealing With Your Anger and Your Child's Anger; Single Father's Parenting Issues;
Parent Leadership: Changing Educational Priorities; Multicultural Diversity Appreciation.
The conference will also feature guest speaker Adolfo Quezada, former Arizona Daily Star
columnist, who will speak on the meaning of fatherhood and how it can influence children's

Free Family Conference Set for Tucson High School
Free workshops and information about Tucson Magnet High School and its Family Wellness
and Resource Center will be provided at "Family Conference" February 14, 9 a.m.
- 1 p.m. Parents of current and future Tucson High School students can participate in 45
minute workshops covering the following topics: Pima Community College Outreach Project;
Violence/Hazing; Clinical Counseling; and Substance Abuse. This year's keynote speaker
will be Judge Frank Zapata. Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m on February 14.

Portable Challenge Course
The portable challenge program provides an experiential learning environment that utilizes
group initiatives and games to promote: team work, trust, self-esteem, problem solving
skills, communications skills and critical thinking skills. To schedule a challenge course

Center to Display Portraits of Cambodian Victims
"Facing Death: Portaits from Cambodia's Killing Fields," an exhibit
featuring one hundred recently restored photographs of Cambodian victims about to be
executed or tortured, will be on view from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and
from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays January 18 through March 1 at Center for Creative Photography
located on the University of Arizona campus on the corner of Speedway Boulevard and Park
Avenue. Ly Soung, a Cambodian-born Tucsonan, will discuss his family's flight from and
death at the hands of the Khmer Rouge at 2 p.m. February 22. Free admission. For more

Think Bikes!
Bike Week `98 has been scheduled for March 14-22, 1998 to coincide with the 4th Avenue
Fair. Bike Week is a 9-day promotional campaign in celebration of the bicycle as a
transportation mode. Each year, the City of Tucson Alternate Modes Program and the Pima
County DEQ Clean Air Program join forces to promote bicycling through special events for
the whole community. One of thetop goals is to increase the number of participants in
every event so as to reach a larger segment of the Tucson community. You can help through
a donation of your time, a small promotional prize, ideas for new events, or any other
service that will assist in promoting bicycling in our community. Please feel free to

Open Airways for Schools
The American Lung Assocation's Open Airway for Schools program is an innovative
education program that helps children learn to manage their asthma. The program consists
of six 40-minute lessons that are taught by a volunteer, teacher, or school nurse who have
been trained by the American Lung Association. It is being offered in several TUSD
elementary schools. The program materials have a distinctive multicultural appeal, and its
take-home materials also engage the parent in the education process. For further
