At the March 7 Governing
Board Meeting, Superintendent George F. García inducted the following individuals into
the Superintendent's Honor Roll:
Edwin Wintermute,
senior at Tucson High Magnet School - Edwin is a candidate for the Presidential
Scholar award. Winners will travel to Washington D.C. for a ceremony where the president
of the United States will present them with a Medallion of Honor.

Nathaniel McDaniel, Michael Wells, Chris Wharam, Reggie Robertson, Jacob Elrod, Marc
Vielledent, A.J. Dyer, Jon Fong, Ben Notheis, and Jeremy Adams, members of the Sahuaro
Boys Basketball Team; Dick McConnell, coach; Bob Vielledent, assistant head coach, Steve
Wharam, assistant coach; William Brock, Kevin Calloway, Torian Cox, Adrian Fernandez, Joey
Haynes, Troy Hoover, Jason Jones, Jeff Knoche, Lamont Pickett (not pictured), Richard
Sims, Joe Smith, William Thompson, Mario Ybarra, members of the Palo Verde Boys Basketball
Team; David Gin, head coach; Mark Abatecota, Tim DeMarchi, Patsy Lee assistant coaches
- The Sahuaro boys basketball team won its third state title in the Class 4A state
championship defeating Sonoran region rival Palo Verde 72-59. David Gin was selected by
the Arizona Daily Star and the Tucson Citizen as the Coach of the Year.
Shira Pinnas, Chang Liu,
Jesse Kirchner, Gina Dumkrieger, Jiajing Liu, Brandon Lee, Bryan Sanders, Chandler
Christoffel and Matt Montgomery, members of UHS's Academic Decathlon team; Steven Reff,
coach - The team took first place in the regional competition and fourth in the
state competition held last month in Mesa. In the regional competition, Shira was honored
as the highest scoring individual. Chang received an outstanding speech award and Jess
Kirchner received an outstanding essay award.
Leah Rios, student at
Roskruge Bilingual Magnet School - Leah won first place in the Aguila Newspapers
art contest and won a year's subscription to the Imparcial newspaper along with a $100
savings bond. She also won first place in the Pio Decimo Art Contest.
Alan Batiste, Mark Brown,
Christopher Chaney, Benjamin Doss, Brian Hickey, Wade Huff, Terry Scott, Ryan Sonnek,
James Vargo, and Lucas Whelan, members of the Santa Rita Boys Basketball team; Jim
Ferguson, head coach; Steve Parr and Kareem Sikes, assistant coaches - The team
had an exceptional season and went on to take the 2000 Kino Region Basketball championship
title.

Notable Achievers
Armando Ronquillo, counselor
at Pueblo High Magnet School, was selected as the Arizona High School Counselor
of the Year. Winners were selected based on their efforts to implement and maintain the
state's Comprehensive Competency based guidance program, which provides education, career
and personal goals for students.
Dodge Magnet Middle School
was recognized the school with the most student participation in the 1999-2000 Grand
Canyon State Games Essay Contest that was sponsored by Ottawa University.
Mary Hinson, job
developer in the special education department at Catalina High Magnet School,
had an article titled "Different Isn't Dumb" published in Leadership magazine.
Miles Exploratory Learning
Center was recognized as the "Outstanding School Garden of the
Southwest" at the third annual Southwest Region Community and School Gardening
Conference sponsored by the University of Arizona and Maricopa County Cooperative
Extension. The school was selected based on its efforts to develop curriculum, utilize
produce and create school yard habitats.

Snap Shots: La Expo and UNITY Highlights
Hundreds of students, parents and
community members attended the 2000 La Expo held March 11 at Pueblo High Magnet School.
Highlights included performances by Pueblo's Mariachi Aztlán, various folklorico groups,
and the winning corrido of the corrido contest. Pictured clockwise, from top, Mariachi
Aztlán, Lawrence Intermediate's Los Cinco Soles Dancers, and the winners of the Bilingual
Corrido Contest, Lizette Mendivil and Gabriela Contreras.

The following Dodge Magnet Middle School students won
medals in the Grand Canyon State Essay Contest sponsored by Ottawa University:
- Gold - Tayyeb Ahmad
- Silver - Kylee Vanise Moses
- Bronze - Jordan Roberts
- Honorable Mention - Leah Majalca, Sara Beckett, Peter Lopez

University High School, Sahuaro High School and Cholla
High Magnet each had teams place in the statewide mock trial competition. UHS
took second place while Cholla placed third and Sahuaro placed sixth. Sixteen teams
competed.

April Conway, a senior at Tucson High Magnet School,
won $100 and an honorable mention for her work on a short story in the ARTS Week 2000
National Arts Competition.

The following students from Booth-Fickett Math and Science Middle
Magnet School swept the middle school level in the second annual Arizona Alliance
for Arts Education Student Essay Contest:
- Caitlin Stevenson - First Place
- Ryan Gonzales - Second Place
- Alex Gross - Third Place

Angela Luciano, a senior at Rincon High School, was
recognized as a Distinguished Finalist by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
program for her impressive community service. She received an engraved bronze medallion.

The following students were recognized for taking part in the ASU 2000
Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration essay/poetry and poster/bookmark contest:

Holocaust
Museum Holds Student Art and Writing Contest
Students in grades
seven through 12 are invited to enter the 2000 May Family Art and Writing contest
sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Deadline for entries is May 3.
Students may submit art or writing entries addressing the contest
question: How did Jewish displaced persons rebuild their lives after the Holocaust?
First prize includes an expense-paid trip for a student and one parent to

Earth Day Festival Set for Tucson Children's Museum
Hands-on activities for
children, a parade, and a variety of information and exhibits on environmental programs
and products will be featured at the sixth annual Earth Day Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Art Exhibition To Feature Various Student Artwork
Paintings, prints,
photographs and other works will be featured at a juried student art exhibition from April
13 through May 5 at Pima Community College Art Gallery, Center for the Arts, West Campus,
2202 W. Anklam Rd.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Tuesdays
from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Allende's "House of Spirits" To Be Presented in English and Spanish
English and Spanish
performances of "The House of the Spirits", will be presented at 10 a.m. April 6
through April 15 at Procscenium Theater, at PCC's West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Rd.
Presented by Pima Community College's Theater Department and Borderland's
Theater, the play is based on the novel by Isabel Allende.
Admission ranges from
