Many of our schools received
numerous honors for their academic or extracurricular activities.
The following is a roundup of the honors recently received by our students:
Students in Cholla's APEX Club/Generations Together received a Good Neighbor
award at the second annual Good Neighbor Awards Celebration sponsored by the Truman
Foundation.

Carla Knochel, a student at Santa Rita was awarded a $6,000 scholarship
through the Youth for Understanding International Exchange/Congress-Bundestag Youth
Exchange Program to attend her senior year in a high school in Germany.

Michelle Jarrell, a junior at Catalina, was awarded one of two $1,500
scholarships given by the Alliance Française to go to France this summer. This is the
second consecutive year that a Catalina student has won this honor.

The following UHS students were selected for the prestigious Flinn Scholarships,
which are valued at $42,000 each: Esther Cardona, Renata Keller and Jenette
Spezeski. Each year, 20 students are selected statewide for the four-year scholarships
that cover tuition for Arizona universities and study abroad programs.

Tiffany Vanover, Adrianna Spatola and Ann Noel students at Keen
took fifth place at the Southern Arizona Regional Science Fair. Another Keen
student Abram Madero won a year's membership to the Arizona Desert Museum for his
project. Ms. Jenna Elias's class took second place at the science fair. Doolen
students won six awards at the science fair including: first place for all categories in
grade six, first place in life sciences grade six, an excellence in communication award,
Southwest Gas Corporation Award, and the SWAEBR Award of Merit.

Carlos Fimbres, a fifth-grader at Lawrence, took first place in the 2000
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest sponsored by the Tucson Education Association.

Earnest Clark, a student at Vail Middle School, took first place in a
bookmark contest sponsored by the Arizona Archaeological Society.

Utterback's concert band received "superior rating" at the ABODA
Pageant of the Bands in Phoenix. The school's jazz band also received a superior rating at
the ABODA Jazz Band Festival in Phoenix.
Pima County Parks and Recreation selected a baseball mural created by Mrs. Connie
Croft's class at Roskruge as one of the winning entries for their "Spring
Training 2000 Baseball's Best" mural contest. Other winners included Mr. Christopher
Loya's class at Tolson and the following students at Santa Rita: Matthew
Manley, Bryan Manley, Nathan Williams, Dan Ellis, Greg Baker, Jessica Throne and Richard
Boring. The murals are on display at Tucson Electric Park's Main Concourse.

Anamaria Hernandez, a student at Catalina received a $500 scholarship
from Pima Community College to attend the pastry school at the Art Institute of Phoenix
after competing in the Careers through Culinary Arts Program, a continuous program with
classes held monthly after school at various high schools in Arizona.

Gabriella Contreras, a student at Roskruge, was selected as one of five react
Magazine's Take Action Award winners. She received a $20,000 scholarship for the
significant contributions she made to her community and was featured in the magazine. She
also had the opportunity to participate in a conference sponsored by the White House
titled "Raising Responsible and Resourceful Youth."

Joquin Nuñez, a student at Hohokam had his poem "Help Us, César
Chavez" published in the spring issue of Rethinking Schools, an urban
educational journal.

The following TUSD students all placed in the 18th annual Conrado
Gómez Torneo de Ortografía held during the 2000 Bilingual Education Expo:

1st - Cristal Martinez, University H.S.

Abigail Smith, a student at Pistor was awarded a full
scholarship worth $26,000 to attend St. Paul's School in New Hampshire. She was given this
award based upon test scores, grades, community involvement and participation in drama.

Amy Burton, a student at Utterback received the Belen
Camacho Award of Excellence for Athletics and Student Achievement. She was presented this
prestigious award during Wildcat women's softball invitational tournament.

Kendrah Pratt, a student at Santa Rita attended the National Youth
Leadership Forum on Law in Washington, D.C. She joined more than 350 outstanding high
school juniors and seniors from America at the conference.
