Congratulations!
At the April 11 Governing Board
Meeting, Superintendent George F. García inducted the following individuals into the
Superintendent's Honor Roll:
Lizette Mendivil and Gabriela Contreras, students at Pueblo High Magnet School Lizette
and Gabriela placed first in TUSD's first corrido writing contest. The students wrote
"Amargo Trago", a song about Lizette's uncle, who died in a drunk-driving
accident three years ago. One of the judges for the contest was award-winning singer Linda
Ronstadt.
Nan Greer, parent volunteer at Townsend Middle School Ms. Greer has done
outstanding coaching work with the school's volleyball, basketball and track and field
teams. In addition, she helps teachers with whatever is needed including running errands
and making copies.
Don Edwards, volunteer at Robison Elementary School Mr. Edwards initiated the
Earn to Learn program at Robison five years ago. Sponsored by Tucson rotary, the program
provides a dollar to any student for every half hour they spend reading with one of the
Earn to Learn mentors. The program at Robison now has a total of 43 mentors.
Richard Corvo, math teacher at Rincon High School; Renee Kirkpatrick, family and
consumer sciences teacher at Cholla High Magnet School; James Kotofskie,
English/Humanities teacher at Catalina High Magnet School; David Salazar, building trades
teacher at Pueblo High Magnet School; and Kristin Tully, English teacher at University
High School All were selected as finalists for the University of Arizona/Circle K
Outstanding High School Faculty Awards program. Mr. Corvo was selected as the program's
1999-2000 Teacher of the Year.
Mary Bayly Nebe, counselor at Kellond Elementary School; Armando Ronquillo,
counselor at Pueblo High Magnet School The Arizona Counselors Association selected Ms.
Nebe as the Elementary School Counselor of the Year and Mr. Ronquillo as the High School
Counselor of the Year.. Winners were selected based on their efforts to implement and
maintain the state's Comprehensive Competency based guidance program, which provides
education, career and personal goals for students.

Notable Achievers
The Automotive Service Program at Pueblo
High Magnet School was the first high school in Arizona to become certified by the
National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence in the areas of brakes and
electrical/electronic systems.
The Tucson Citizen selected Scott
Snider, volleyball coach at Santa Rita High School as the 1999 Southern Arizona
Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year. He had coached the Santa Rita team to an undefeated
season in the 4A Kino region and its first region title.
Rosanna Gallagher, director of
Professional Development, received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Arizona
Council of Administrators in Special Education. She was recognized for creating an
inclusive school with innovative programming while principal at Robins.
Booth-Fickett received the
Magnet Schools of America Merit Award at the 18th annual International Magnet Schools of
America Conference. The selection was based on a commitment to high academic standards,
curriculum innovation, successful desegregation efforts, and the consistent delivery of
quality services to the entire school community.
Shelly Camp, a sign language
teacher at Cholla, received a Good Neighbor Award from the Truman Foundation for
her work with youth.
The Arizona Interscholastics
Athletics Association selected Sabino for the Tony Komadina Award for Outstanding
Girls' Athletic Program.
Mary Herrick's third grade
class at Collier was the Arizona winner in the Share the Joy of Reading classroom
Sweepstakes sponsored by the BOOK IT program.

Internship
Program Offered Through Mayor's Office
High school students interested in
political science or a related field can sign up for an intership position at the Tucson
mayor's office. Deadline to submit letters of inquiry and recommendations is May 30.
Duties will include researching information, utilizing the Internet, and preparing
reports concerning items of special interest to Mayor Bob Walkup and his staff.

TUSD and UA
Sponsor Summer Science Workshop
Teachers for grades
three through eight can get a chance to study the nature of light, its physical, chemical
and biological aspects with the help of UA scientists. Deadline to enroll is May 29.
Co-sponsored by TUSD and UA, the two week program runs from June is
free for teachers and $150 for non-teachers.

Tohono O'odham Culture to be Featured at Annual Waila Festival
Tohono O'odham music, dance and food will be featured at the 12th annual
Waila Festival running from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. May 20 at UA's Bear Down Field, located on
the southwest corner of Cherry Avenue and Fourth Street.

Noted Writers to Participate in PCC Writer's Workshop
Writers Leonard Bishop,
J.R. Daily and Steve Kaire will share their literary experiences and advice at the annual
Pima Community Colleges writers' workshop May 26 through May 28 at the PCC West Campus
Center for the Arts, 2202 W. Anklam Rd. Deadline to register is May 25.
A meet-the-author reception will kick off the workshop at 7 p.m.
May 25 at the InnSuites hotel, 474 N. Granada. Cost is $65 for non-credit registration and
$68 for credit registration.

Society to Offer
Summer Museum Program for Kids
Students ages seven to 12 can participate in Museum Discovery program, a
hands-on history summer day camp running weekly from June 5 through Aug. 14 at the Arizona
Historical Society, 949 E. Second St.
Sessions last one week and range from $110 for a full day or $65
for a half day.
