Opening of School Conference
Mark your calendar! The Opening of School Conference for the 1997-98 school year will be
held on Wednesday, August 13, 1997 at the Tucson Convention Center. The first day of
school will be August 18. Insurance Annual Open Enrollment Meetings May 1-30
TUSD employees wishing to add, change or delete fringe benefits, insurance coverages
(health, dental, vision, disability, supplemental life) must submit enrollment and/or
change forms between May 1 and May 30, 1997 only. The next open enrollment
will not be held until April 1998. Annual open enrollment meetings have been scheduled for
the following dates and times:
Wednesday, May 7, 2:30-5 p.m., Palo Verde High Magnet School Cafeteria
Tuesday, May 13, 2:30-5 p.m., Pueblo High Magnet School Cafeteria
Thursday, May 29, 2:30-5 p.m., Rincon High School Cafeteria

The 1998-99 Open Enrollment period will be April 1, 1998 through April 30, 1998.
You Can Make a Difference Volunteering for Project YES
If you have some spare time to donate to a worthy cause, Project YES has volunteer
opportunities providing tutoring and mentoring with youth in the South Tucson area. The
organization also assists parents with improving parenting skills. Project YES is a
non-profit organization providing enrichment and support that seeks a diverse group of
volunteers to be role models for youth. For more information, call Will Walker or Dianne

SEEK Program Offers Discount to TUSD Employees
The annual bulletin for the award-winning childrens activities program, SEEK (Summer
Education and Enrichment for Kids), is now available from the University of Arizona
Extended University. More than 100 classes will be offered in four two-week sessions. The
new season begins May 27. In addition, Extended University sponsors three specialty
summer camps in science, writing and arts to be held at Magee Middle School. TUSD
employees receive discounts on the fees for the program. For more information, call

Salary Increment Credit Classes
May 30 is the final day to register for Professional Development Salary Increment
Credit Classes. The April Catalog Addendum includes several courses that are available for
credit. You can register in the Professional Development Department, Room 201, Morrow
Education Center, 1010 East 10th Street, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you have any

African American Student Recognition
The annual African American Student Recognition Program will be held
Monday, May 5, at the Tucson Convention Center Ballroom, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The
program will recognize students for achievement in the areas of academic excellence,
attendance, athletics, fine arts, and volunteer service. For further information, call

Graduation/promotion recognition award feast
The TUSD Native American Studies Department will honor high school
graduating seniors and recognize students who will be promoted from eighth and fifth
grades and kindergarten at the 1996-1997 Graduation and Promotion Recognition Award Feast.
The event will be held Saturday, May 3, at the Tucson High Magnet School cafeteria
from 4 to 8 p.m. The Ft. McDowell High School Crown Dancers will perform from 5 to 6 p.m.,
and dinner will be served between 6 and 7 p.m. Student recognition begins at 7 p.m.
Puppet show teaches importance of sun protection
A puppet show sponsored by the Arizona Cancer Center teaches young
students, preschool through third grade, about protecting themselves from the sun. After
the show, children are shown how to make a protective hat. Any school interested in the

Gridley honoring retirees
Gridley Middle School is honoring retirees Dr. Betsy Hansen, Keith
Pavlik and Leila Vladich Saturday, May 10 from 7 to 10 p.m. at La Mariposa, 1501 N.

Ford Library Renamed
Chuck Cohen, retired long-time librarian at Ford Elementary School,
will be honored at a reception May 6, 1997 at 7 p.m. in the Ford Library. At that
time, the library will be officially named The Charles H. Cohen Library. Cohen was a TUSD
employee for more than two decades, serving as librarian at Ford for 17 years. He now
works at the school as an aide. All former students, TUSD staff and friends are invited to

Clerical Conference
The Clerical Conference will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the
Holiday Inn Palo Verde. The nationally known Linda Lee Cole will be the guest speaker.
More information will be available at a later date.
