SEPTEMBER 1998

CONGRATULATIONS!

At the August 11 Governing Board meeting, the following individuals were inducted into the Superintendent's Honor Roll:

Art Almquist, drama teacher at Tucson High School, was chosen by renowned movie critic Gene Siskel as the winner of a national contest titled "You Be The Movie Critic". Mr. Almquist's one-hour show "Art the Movie Critic" premiered July 27 on U.S. Satellite Broadcasting Channel 999 and ran through July 31.

Patricia A. Poore, a former TUSD dental hygenist, retired in May after 31 and a half years of dedicated service. Ms. Poore's commitment and devotion greatly impacted the district's youth.

Mari Helen High, a parent volunteer at Catalina High Magnet School, has used her knowledge of school-to-work resources to write grants with Judyth Lessee, Catalina's librarian, and was also instrumental in helping Catalina become the first school to host the AIDS Quilt tour last December.

Tonia Rock, also a parent volunteer, has assisted staff at Reynolds Elementary for more than five years with field trips, lesson plans and other school projects. Among other things, she organized and directed the school's Dig Reynolds Project which allows students to learn about archeology, Arizona culture and history.

If you would like to nominate someone for the Superintendent's Honor Roll, please call the Communications Department for a nomination form at 617-7303.

TUSD Students Receive Free School Supplies from Costco

About 700 students received backpacks filled with school supplies from Costco Wholesale on Aug. 17 at Menlo Park Elementary School and at Drachman Primary Elementary School.

Through the company's Communities In Schools and Adopt-A-School programs, backpacks filled with binders, notebooks, crayons and other items were distributed by Costco volounteers and staff at Menlo Park. Drachman teachers distributed the backpacks during lessons designed to instill the importance of being prepared with appropriate schools supplies.

Costco volunteers also joined Drachman staff on Aug. 14 in the school's cafeteria for a "backpack stuffing party" to fill the backpacks with school supplies.

School Safety Reminder

In light of the recent violence at schools that has taken the spotlight in the news media, all TUSD personnel are urged to report to school administrators and/or the Department of School Safety ANYONE making threats or boasting about owning or carrying a weapon. In the majority of cases, someone is aware of a potential violent situation. You are also encouraged to report other information such as gang activity, potential problems after school, graffiti, truancy, etc.

Reports can be made in several ways:

  1. Notify your site administrator.
  2. Send an e-mail to TUSD school security.
  3. Anonymous reports can be made to the Safe-T-Zone.
  4. Call the Department of School Safety 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 512-3080.
