TUSD News

Two TUSD Schools and Center Selected for Safe Schools Program

Holladay Intermediate Magnet School, Marshall Elementary School and TUSD's Behavior Intervention Center (BIC) were selected to participate in the AT&T Safe Schools program.

Designed to increase safety and enhance the learning environment for students in Arizona schools, the program will provide two Ericsson Digital PCS phones and 160 minutes of local airtime per month for each one for the 1998-99 school year. Phone service will include caller ID, message waiting indicator for AT&T voice mail, e-mail messaging, and paging. Holladay, Booth-Fickett and the BIC program were among 50 schools in Arizona chosen to participate in the program. "We developed this program because wireless technology has the unique capability of providing quick, vital communications to help increase student safety in the classroom, on the playground, and in a number of school settings," said Glenn Lurie, vice president and general manager for AT&T Wireless Services.

Gale Elementary School and Booth-Fickett Magnet School, which were recently selected as "Quality Schools" by TUSD, were formally recognized with banner presentations on Sept. 15. A TUSD Quality School symbolizes excellence at the school level that positively impacts the school's instructional program. A review panel selected schools based on their continuous documented progress in student achievement and their exemplary ratings in all of TUSD's Action 2000 Quality Standards. Other schools designated as Quality Schools included Dodge Middle School, Kellond Elementary School, Student Learning Intervention Center (SLIC) and Sahuaro High School. In addition to the banners, the schools will receive a plaque, an additional $1,000 in their budgets, district support in applying for the state's A+ School award and guaranteed support in staff development focused on sharing programs within the District.
