Ford Teacher Chosen as
Local Wal-Mart's 1998
Teacher of the Year

Shirley Chandler, a fifth-grade teacher at Ford Elementary School, was honored on Sept. 30 as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Teacher of the Year.

Joyce M. Geranis, principal at Ford, and Denito Kelly, a local Wal-Mart manager, along with the entire Ford student body recognized Ms. Chandler's efforts for the school and the community.

Ms. Chandler, who has taught for six years at Ford and has worked with TUSD for nearly 20 years, will receive a $500 grant and a Teacher of the Year vest. During her years at Ford, she has led students in the Champs Have And Model Positive Peer Skills (CHAMPS) group, a student leadership club that promotes unity and non-violence among students, and helped organize the filming of an anti-tobacco commercial with her class.

Each Wal-Mart store and SAM's Club selects a deserving teacher from those nominated by schools in that community. The $500 award is given each year to promote teaching excellence nationwide and to better educate our young students. Applications are available in January and February only from Wal-Mart and SAM'S Club managers.

Cholla's Global Village and Law Programs Receive National Recognition
