Teran Wins Art Contest
When Daniel Teran turned in his art contest entry
he told his teacher that he would win. The judges agreed, awarding
him first place in his category for a poster showing "How I Celebrate
My Hispanic Culture and Heritage."
Teran, a sixth grader in Karen Mitchell’s visual
art class at Safford Engineering Technology Magnet Middle
School, won six tickets and dinner to the University of
Arizona football game on Oct. 21.
UA displayed a large banner with Teran’s photograph and his winning
art piece during halftime.

Teran also received a plaque during breakfast at Safford on Oct.
24. The university and TUSD’s La Raza Department sponsored the contest.
Teran’s winning art piece is a colored pencil drawing of four images
arranged in the pattern of the Mexican flag.
Though Teran is not in Mitchell’s class this quarter, he still
spends most of his lunchtime in her classroom perfecting his art.
Mitchell said she was the first one to buy one of Teran’s pieces,
spending $20 this fall for a water color of several cats eating
dinner. "He’s going to be famous for his artwork some day," Mitchell
predicted. "This award gives him confidence and it's something he'll
always be proud of."
