Still in School
Summer session helps students catch up, get ahead
Sabino summer school studentsWhen doors closed at the end of the last school year, most students kicked back, took family vacations and went to summer camps. But for hundreds of other students, the end of the year meant more doors were opening - this time at summer school.

In the Tucson Unified School District high schools, summer school offers students a chance to make up a failed course, improve a passing grade or earn extra credits to free up their schedule for the next year. Students from non-TUSD schools may attend summer classes at any TUSD school and TUSD students are also allowed to attend other district schools.

At two of the east side schools that Focus visited - Sabino and Sahuaro - enrollment is thin and self-generated funds are at a premium, while at a west side school - Cholla Magnet - extra revenue boosts the coffers and some interested students were turned away.

TUSD high schools: Summer School
Classes were held at these locations: Catalina Magnet, Cholla Magnet, Palo Verde Magnet, Pueblo Magnet, Sabino, Sahuaro and Tucson High Magnet. Classes were also held for Alternative Education students.

Classes met from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The exceptions were Cholla Magnet High School, which met from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Rincon and Alternative Education, which also offered afternoon classes from 1 to 6:30. Distance Learning labs opened at 8 a.m.

The first session was May 27 to June 11. The second semester was June 12 to June 27. Tuition was $100 for one-half credit and $190 for a full credit. A $10 non-refundable registration fee was included.
