Focus on TUSD - February 2008

School Closings Topic of Meetings
Wrightstown, Corbett, Rogers and Ochoa on the List
The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board will hold public hearings to discuss the board's decision to consider closing Corbett, Ochoa, Rogers and Wrightstown elementary schools.

The hearings will be:

  • Friday, March 14 at 6-8 p.m. at Rincon High School Auditorium, 421 N. Arcadia Blvd.
  • Monday, March 17, 5-7 p.m. at Corbett Elementary School, 5949 E. 29th St.
  • Monday, March 17, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Rogers Elementary School, 6000 E. 14th St.
  • Tuesday, March 18, 6-8 p.m. at Ochoa Elementary School, 101 W. 25th St.
  • Wednesday, March 19, 6-8 p.m. at Wrightstown Elementary School, 8950 E. Wrightstown Road

The TUSD Governing Board voted 3-2 on Feb. 12 to begin the process to consider closing the four elementary schools, which were recommended for closure based on strategic allocation of District resources, academic performance, low enrollment, declining enrollment trends, proximity to receiving schools and academic performance of receiving schools.

At the public hearings, Governing Board members will hear reasons for and against closure of the schools.

A notice about the public hearings has been mailed to the parents/guardians of students who attend the schools recommended for closure, and to the parents/guardians of children who attend the schools that have been suggested as receiving schools.

In addition to the public hearings, TUSD will hold Superintendent Information Meetings at each of the schools recommended for closure to discuss the proposed closure, as well as related attendance boundary changes that could result from the closure. These Superintendent Information Meetings have been scheduled:

  • Monday, March 3, 6-8 p.m. at Ochoa Elementary School, 101 W. 25th St.
  • Tuesday, March 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Corbett Elementary School, 5949 E. 29th St.
  • Thursday, March 6, 6-8 p.m. at Rogers Elementary School, 6000 E. 14th St.
  • Friday, March 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Wrightstown Elementary School, 8950 E. Wrightstown Road

Visit the School Closure web pages on the TUSD Web site for more information and regular updates or call Communications & Media Relations at 225-6437.

Questions about school closures may be submitted using the online "Question and Comments" form. Questions and comments submitted online forwarded to Superintendent Roger F. Pfeuffer and members of the Governing Board.
