Members Selected for TUSD's Audit Committee
An attorney, a certified public accountant, an economist,
a former internal auditor for IBM, and the executive director
of Greater Tucson Leadership were appointed to Tucson Unified
District's internal Audit Committee by the TUSD Governing
Board at its regular meeting on Aug. 14. The positions are
non-paid.
The Audit Committee was created to assist board members
in complying with their fiduciary oversight obligations, to
strengthen the District's internal financial controls,
and to provide greater transparency over public funds. Appointed
to two-year terms were:
- Clifford B. Altfeld, an attorney in private
practice who served on the Catalina Foothills School Board
for 12 years;
- Loretto Peto, managing member of Peto
& Co., a certified public accounting practice;
- Mark Stegeman, associate professor of
economics at the University of Arizona, Eller College of
Management;
- Sandra L. Parker, who has experience
establishing business and system controls and who was an
internal auditor with IBM for eight years; and,
- Lea Marquez Peterson, a Sabino High School
graduate, the mother of a TUSD student, and the executive
director of Greater Tucson Leadership, an organization that
examines challenges in the community and offers solutions
for addressing them. Peterson has a master's degree in business
administration from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.
In June, Board Member Alex Rodriguez suggested creating an
audit committee to assist board members with financial oversight
of TUSD funds. "The Board was exceptionally pleased
at the high caliber of the candidates that stepped forward
to serve our students and community; and we look forward to
their contributions to improve the quality of education for
all our students through the TUSD Governing Board Audit Committee"
said Rodriguez.
