Howenstine High Magnet School Hosts Wall-raising Ceremony
A wall raising ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 24, kicked off the construction of a new house and the partnership between Howenstine High Magnet School and Habitat for Humanity, Tucson, at the school, 555 S. Tucson Blvd.

Howenstine is a service learning magnet school that provides community service learning experience to its students through its building technology curriculum. One of the school's goals, according to Principal Jimmy Hart, is to develop the magnet focus of service learning by concentrating on partnerships with families and community organizations to improve student achievement.

The partnership between Howenstine and Habitat, Tucson is an ideal example of the school's mission, where students achieve through service-learning, Hart said. The building project will support the school's construction technology students, as they integrate building technology with community need. The participants, sponsors, Tucson Unified School District administrators and Governing Board members, and community members attended the ceremony.

Chuck Sillence, the building technology teacher, and staff at Howenstine are proud to teach their students the building technology state standards through a meaningful, hands-on service learning experience that helps the Tucson community grow and prosper, Hart said.
