Policy Governance would strengthen District

Board president Alex Rodriguez

Dear TUSD Community:

With our new school year off to a fantastic start, the Governing Board is very thankful to everyone who worked so hard to prepare for this new semester. Over the summer, the Board kept quite busy with Dr. Elizabeth Celania-Fagen’s transition as new superintendent, budget negotiations, and preparations for the new school year among other items. A key piece of our work over the summer occurred in early August in the form of training on Policy Governance.

So what exactly is Policy Governance?  Glad you asked…

The Governing Board, in conjunction with Superintendent Fagen, retained Dr. John Carver, who is known as the father of policy governance, for a day-long training session on this important topic. Policy governance as defined by Carver is "an integrated board leadership paradigm that empowers boards of directors to fulfill their obligation of accountability for the organizations they govern."

With interest shared by all members of the board, we will soon be moving forward with training and implementation of a new method of conducting Board business on behalf of our school district’s "owners."  This framework, Policy Governance, provides us with the potential to strengthen how the board makes decisions and ultimately leads the school district.

On behalf of a truly grateful Governing Board, thank you to each one of you for working hard to make TUSD a great school district.

Go TUSD!
