Governing Board faces issues

Board president Alex Rodriguez

Dear TUSD Community:

In the spirit of striving for excellence, as we reach mid-point of the fall semester, this is an excellent time of year to evaluate whether we are progressing toward our top goals as a District and on your own as either a TUSD student or valued employee. How are you doing relative to the goals that you set for yourself this semester? How are we doing overall as an organization to assure our students are making good progress?  For students, do you find that your achievements are allowing you to learn as much as possible and that you are on track to make top grades?

Major issues at the Governing Board Level:

MGT Audit Committee

Operational departments across our district are currently working on implementing many of the MGT audit recommendations. There will likely be an update to the Governing Board this winter.  Other appropriate and beneficial audits are currently being considered by the executive team.

Policy Governance

Board members have unanimously voted to move forward with Policy Governance. For our community, staff, students, and other stakeholders, this means that the Governing Board, in collaboration with the community, will set new “ends” or outcomes for our students, which will move our district outcomes into the 21st Century. They will likely focus on the kinds of skills that our children will need to be successful in the next 50-100 years.  This is a critical step in the Tucson Unified Schools transformation.

New Board Members:

As you may know, Joel Ireland and I will not be on the ballot for re-election to the Governing Board next month. With three candidates for three open seats, Mark Stegeman and Miguel Cuevas will become the new board members on Jan. 6. They will join incumbent Judy Burns on the Board.

Mark and Miguel have started their formal orientation process to learn more about TUSD so that they can hit the ground running as new Governing Board members. Please welcome them warmly if you get a chance to meet them in the weeks ahead and during the transition to the next Board.

As always, the Governing Board thanks all of you for your valued contributions to our students and the District.

Go TUSD!
