Duffy Elementary School, 5145 E. Fifth St., has been chosen
as the first school in Tucson and Pima County to serve as a
distribution center for the Gleaned Food Program, operated by
the Tucson Community Food Bank. The next community
distribution at the school site is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 11.
Through the Gleaned Food Program, volunteers gather
leftover crops - such as oranges, grapefruit, corn, lettuce,
onions and chiles - from area growers, which the Tucson
Community Food Bank distributes to local families in need.
Produce is brought to Duffy Elementary School, where students
participating in a community service project bag up the food
for distribution and invite community members to pick up a bag
of produce in the afternoon. In addition, parents of
participating students deliver bags to elderly neighbors who
are unable to go to the school.
The Gleaned Food Program supplements Duffy students'
nutrition education offered through the University of Arizona
Cooperative Extension's Five A Day program, which promotes the
importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables.
