Michael Peel, a senior at Rincon High School, 421 N. Arcadia
Blvd., was selected to attend the second annual New Partners for Smart Growth conference from Jan. 30 through Feb. 1 in New Orleans.
Michael was among 33 students representing 30 communities and 17 states chosen to participate in the conference. The U.S. Department of Energy's Rebuild America program provided him with a $1,100 scholarship to cover conference fees, meals, travel, and lodging. Youth delegates will participate in preparatory workshops on how state and local and governments operate, learn about their peers' communities, and attend sessions with their adult counterparts.
The Smart Growth conference educates a broad range of practitioners about how community members can redesign existing urban neighborhoods and improve the design of new neighborhoods to create safe, walkable, bikeable urban environments. Approximately 1,000 people from around the nation and other countries participated in last year's conference.
