TUSD Holds Conference to Encourage Higher Education for Latino Students

TUSD Latino high school juniors who aspire to attend college will learn from Tucson Latino community members what it takes to succeed in college and thrive in the business world at the second annual Adelante Leadership Conference from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Rincon High School, 421 N. Arcadia Blvd.

Participants will learn how to select a college major, techniques to obtaining financial aid and scholarships, as well as how to find and utilize college-bound Latino-specific resources. Representatives from several colleges including Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, and Pima Community College will be on site to offer further school-specific information. Pueblo alum and president of R.E.A. Communications, Raul Aguirre, will keynote the event, and John Balentine from the College Board will discuss test-taking preparations. 

Sixty-one students attended last year’s conference. TUSD Deputy Superintendent Patti Lopez will also attend. The event is sponsored by the TUSD Mexican American/RAZA Studies Department.
