Sixty-five first-graders at Henry Elementary School, 650 N. Igo
Way, will get a boost in their reading skills when two horses and their handler from the Black Stallion Literacy Project arrive at
1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and assemble near the school’s basketball courts.
The event is part of project’s First Grade Program, which provides teachers with two hardback books for students to keep, 6’6” stand-ups and 20” X 30” posters of the Black Stallion for each classroom. During the assembly, students will be introduced to the horses and treated to a lesson on mares and stallions followed by a petting session. Afterwards, students will receive a copy of Walter Farley’s
Little Black, a Pony to read before visiting the Al Marah Stables for a Community Horse Day on March 8. During the stable visit, students will read their favorite passage from the book to the horse and handler, feed and groom horses, and receive their second book by Farley titled
Little Black Goes to the Circus.
The Black Stallion Literacy Project was founded in 1999 and serves first and fourth-graders. Since its inception, the program has reached over 100,000 students in 12 states. The First Grade Program was created to introduce children to literature and to instill a love of reading by combining a live horse experience with the Walter Farley books,
Little Black, A Pony and Little Black Goes to the Circus.
