What has become known as Black History Month evolved from the efforts of Carter G. Woodson, an historian, educator, author, and intellectual, to establish Negro History Week, which was inaugurated in February of 1926. The purpose of Negro History Week was to promote greater awareness of African American achievements. Woodson is known as the “Father of Black History.”
