Two dance concerts this month will feature TUSD students and community performers in a
celebration of Black History Month and the Asian New Year.
"Year of the Horse," featuring dances of Korea, Japan, the
Philippines, India, China, Hawaii and Vietnam, will be presented at 10 a.m. Friday,
Feb. 8. "Harambee: Coming Together," commemorating African and
African American heritage through storytelling, music, dance and drumming, will be
presented at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19. Both events, open to pre-registered TUSD
classes only, will be held at Tucson High Magnet School, 400 N. Second Ave.
The dance presentations are part of a comprehensive multicultural education program for
K-12 students and teachers, planned as a collaborative effort of the Pan Asian American
Studies, African American Studies and Fine and Performing Arts departments. Teachers
participated in a one-hour in-service training session and developed lesson plans and
activities focusing on African American and Pan Asian cultures, which will be implemented
after the performances.
