The Pan Asian Community Alliance awarded TUSD with its Friend of Pan Asian Community award at its annual Pan Asian Lunar New Year Celebration on
Feb. 4 at the Desert Diamond Casino located on Pima Mine Road and I-19, south of Tucson.
The award is given annually to an individual and an organization demonstrating outstanding support of Tucson’s Pan-Asian community. TUSD was honored for its collaboration with Tucson’s Asian community on various efforts and services including the establishment of the district’s Pan Asian Studies Department and Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer’s service as a founding director of the Pan Asian Community Alliance. The award also recognizes the partnership between TUSD and the alliance in creating Neighborhood After School Academy or NASA program which provides tutoring services in academic subjects and computer education classes to middle and high school students. TUSD Governing Board clerk Alex Rodriguez accepted the award on the district’s behalf.
The Pan Asian Studies Department serves as an advocate for Asian/Pacific Islander students and acts as a liaison between TUSD and the Tucson Pan Asian community. In 1998, the TUSD Governing Board established the Pan Asian Studies Department after consultation with the Pan Asian Community Alliance of Tucson. The board formed this department to address the misperception of Asian students as a single, problem-free minority population in our schools. For more information, please visit:
